Utthan’s journey began in 1981, when four women chose to work in the desolate Bhal region of Gujarat, helping vulnerable communities to self-organise around critical livelihood issues and develop local leadership. Its name was carefully chosen in its meaning: ‘rising’, in Hindi.
VISION: Utthan envisions a society that imbibes and ensures the values of gender justice, equity, peace and happiness, in practice.
MISSION: To empower women and young girls by providing them with the perspective, resources and tools they need to amplify their voice, gain access & control over productive resources, entitlements & services, and take control of their bodily autonomy.
Today, Utthan directly touches the lives of more than 12 lakh people of 265 villages of Amreli, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, Panchmahal, Dahod & Mahisagar districts of Gujarat.
It aspires to scale this positive influence to at least 25 lakh individuals by 2027.
